'The Hobbit' Clobbering Tom Cruise, Comedies at Holiday Box Office

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” was heading for an easy second week victory at the box office, on pace for a $32 million weekend after rolling up an estiimated $10 million Friday.
That’s way ahead of the Tom Cruise thriller “Jack Reacher,” which debuted with $5 million Friday and is looking at around $15 million for the weekend. Audiences liked it, giving it an “A-“ CinemaScore, but it's not going to be "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol." That opened to $12 million in a limited debut last year but made nearly $30 million in its second-week wide rollout.
Though it's behind their opening pace, “Jack Reacher” could wind up playing more like Cruise's “Knight and Day,” which opened to $20 million and went on to make $76 million for Fox in 2010, or “Valkyrie,” which did $83 million in 2008 after opening to $21 million.
“The Hobbit” dropped nearly 70 percent from last week's opening, but those numbers were swelled by midnight screenings. Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth epic now has a domestic total of $129 million and is approaching $350 million worldwide for Warner Bros.
The overall box office wasn’t as busy as the studios had hoped for. It’s running nearly 20 percent behind the comparable weekend last year, when “Ghost Protocol” made $29 million and “Sherlock Holmes” made $20 million, both in their second weeks.
A notable exception was Sony's Oscar front-runner "Zero Dark Thirty," Kathryn Bigelow's saga of the manhunt for Osama bin Laden. It took in $115,000 from five locations for a $23,095 per-screen average, by far the best of any film in release. It's taken in a strong $344,000 since opening Wednesday.
Writer-director Judd Apatow’s Universal comedy “This is 40” was in third and on course for a three-day total of around $13 million after taking in $3.7 million Friday. First-night audiences gave it a “B-“ CinemaScore.
It’s doing far better than Paramount’s “Guilt Trip,” which opened Wednesday. The Barbra Streisand-Seth Rogen road comedy brought in $1.5 million Friday and is looking at just $4.2 million for the three days, around $6.2 for the five-day period.
The same studio’s other Friday opener, 3D concert film “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away," managed $850,000 from about 800 screens and is tracking for a $2.8 million weekend.
In its fifth week, DreamWorks Animation’s “Rise of the Guardians” was in fourth and has raised its overall domestic gross to nearly $80 million. It took in $1.5 million Friday and will likely finish the weekend at around $6 million.
“Guardians” was off just two percent from the previous week, and wasn’t hurt much by Disney’s 3D re-release of “Monsters, Inc.,” which brought in $1.3 million and is looking at $4.6 million for the weekend.
That’s well off the pace of two 3D re-releases from Disney earlier this year.

Amour (Love) (12A) - Opens Friday 16 November 2012

Four out of Five stars
Running time: 127 mins

Michael Haneke's stunningly directed Palme D'Or winner is a haunting and emotionally devastating drama with a strong script and a pair of powerhouse performances from veteran actors Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.

What's it all about?
Written and directed by Michael Haneke, Amour is set in present-day Paris and stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva as married couple Georges and Anne, a pair of retired music teachers in their 80s. After attending a concert given by a former student of Anne's, Georges is horrified when Anne suffers a mild stroke that signals the onset of dementia and partial paralysis.

As Anne's condition deteriorates, she makes Georges promise that he won't put her into the hospital, so he attempts to cope with the ever-increasing demands of her daily care. To this end, he receives various degrees of help from their daughter Eva (Huppert), a kind-hearted nurse (Carole Franck) and their apartment building's concierge and her husband (Rita Blanco and Ramon Agirre).

The Good
Trintignant and Riva (both veteran French film stars, as if to give extra added poignancy for cinephiles) deliver terrific performances that are heartbreaking to watch (needless to say, this is not a film to take your grandparents to). Their overwhelming love for one another is palpable throughout and the intensity of it is further heightened by Haneke's decision to confine the action to the four walls of their Parisian apartment (with the single exception of the early scene at the concert).

Haneke shoots the action in his usual style, using long takes and dispensing with a musical score. The effect of this is to create an intensely intimate atmosphere, although the use of long takes also allows for a rather brilliant extended sequence involving a pigeon that's simultaneously saddening and laugh-out-loud funny.

The Great
The script explores some powerful ideas surrounding both love and death and Haneke orchestrates a number of sequences that are by turns shocking (a terrifying nightmare scene), emotionally devastating and genuinely haunting; the sequence where Anne goes completely blank at the breakfast table is more horrifying than any horror film moment you'll see this year and will stay with you long after you leave the cinema.

Worth seeing?
Impressively directed and superbly written, Amour is a powerfully emotional drama with a pair of sublime performances from Trintignant and Riva. Highly recommended.

Killing Them Softly

Opens Friday 21 September 2012
Four out of Five stars
Running time: 97 mins

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is a highly entertaining, pleasingly literate thriller with terrific performances from a note-perfect cast.

What's it all about?

Directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James), Killing Them Softly is based on a novel by George V. Higgins (Cogan's Trade, the film's original title) and set, very pointedly, in the autumn of 2008, during the Presidential election. Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn play low-life criminals Frankie and Russell, who agree to rob a card game organised by local gangster Markie (Ray Liotta), on the assumption that Markie himself will get the blame as he'd pulled a similar trick in the past.

However, though the heist goes off without a hitch, the plan to blame Markie doesn't quite pan out and mob fixer Driver (Richard Jenkins) calls in hitman Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt) to investigate the robbery and deal with whoever's responsible. Jackie, in turn, hires his old cohort Mickey (James Gandolfini) - partly because he doesn't like killing people he knows and partly because Mickey needs the work - but when Mickey turns out to be a wreck, Jackie gets on with the job himself.

The Good
The performances are excellent, particularly McNairy and Mendelsohn, who are both splendidly weaselly in markedly different ways (McNairy is by some distance the more sympathetic of the two). Brad Pitt is equally good as Cogan, bringing a slightly harder edge to his usual laid-back screen persona and there's strong support from Liotta and the ever-reliable Jenkins, while Gandolfini almost steals the entire film with a terrific supporting turn that could almost serve as an epilogue to The Sopranos.

The intelligent, pleasingly literary script is packed with great dialogue and if the metaphorical associations between the onscreen action and the state of America in 2008 (TVs and radios are constantly blaring election reports, discussion about the financial crisis and so on) are a little heavy-handed at times, they do at least pay off in a terrific final scene.

The Great
The film is also impressively shot, with Greig Fraser's murky cinematography giving the film a subtle 1970s feel that works well. It's also brilliantly structured and Dominik orchestrates a number of superb sequences, including a stylishly soundtracked slow-motion shooting, a sweatily tense heist scene and handful of powerful shock moments.

Worth seeing?
Killing Them Softly is a brilliantly directed, superbly acted and thoroughly satisfying thriller that's rich in both character and dialogue. Highly recommended.

The Sweeney

Three out of Five stars
Running time: 107 mins

The Sweeney is pacily directed, superbly acted and delivers some exciting action sequences, but the only elements that remain from the TV show are the names of the characters and the central catchphrase.

What's it all abaaaht?
Directed by Nick Love, The Sweeney is nominally based on the popular 1970s TV show and stars Ray Winstone as hardened Flying Squad cop Jack Regan. Acting on a tip-off from a shady informant (Alan Ford), Regan and his partner George Carter (Ben Drew) arrest known criminal Francis Allen (Paul Anderson) for a jewellery shop heist in which a woman was killed. However, they're forced to let him go after his alibi holds up, calling the Squad's judgement and methods into disrepute. To complicate matters still further, Regan is sleeping with his colleague Nancy (Hayley Atwell), who's married to Lewis (Steven Mackintosh), the man in charge of the Internal Affairs investigation.

The Good
Winstone can do this sort of thing in his sleep, but he turns in a fully committed performance that occasionally hints at a more vulnerable side to Regan, even if we perhaps didn't need to see him clambering on top of Hayley Atwell or having sex with her in a toilet (be prepared: it isn't pretty and you won't be able to unsee it). Drew is equally good as Carter, pulling off a measured deadpan turn that works well, while there's strong support from Atwell, Damian Lewis (as Regan's boss) and Steven Mackintosh, who's splendidly slimy as Lewis.

Say what you like about director Nick Love (here taking a break from making films about lairy, sweary football hooligans or gangsters to make a film about lairy, sweary cops), but he knows his way around an action sequence and he duly orchestrates a number of exciting set-pieces, including a high speed country lane chase and a thrilling maximum firepower shootout in and around Trafalgar Square. Indeed, the location work in general is extremely impressive, staging key scenes in London locations that aren't often seen on film.

The Bad
The main problem is that the only thing the film takes from the TV version is the character names and catchphrases (‘You're nicked’, ‘You slaaaags’, etc), completely ignoring the show's whole set-up of underfunded cops getting the job done (Love's Sweeney have hi-tech surveillance equipment, a flashy glass-walled office complex and an iPad each). Similarly, the dialogue is passable but should have been a lot better, while the derivative plot borrows liberally from The Dark Knight and nicks its key action sequences from Heat; there's also a pointless prison sequence that has no consequence and serves no purpose other than to reference Winstone's role as ‘The Daddy’ in Scum.

Worth seeing?
Providing you have no emotional attachment to the TV series, The Sweeney is an entirely watchable cop thriller, enlivened by strong performances and exciting action scenes, though it's slightly let down by a patchy and occasionally derivative script.
